6-speed Getrag swap need 6-speed rear-end?
Hey guys, I have a Getrag 6-speed on my SC400 (Yes SC400 the V8)
I still have the stock rear-end with the stock 3.96:1 gear. I did upgrade to the auto TT supra torsen Diff.
I keep hearing that I should put in the TT 6-speed rear-end as I'm going to break the stock unit.
I did break the stock carrier, but have replaced it with the TT auto torsen unit.
Has anyone had any experience breaking that?
I'm trying to get an idea of what to expect. Should I just sell the stock unit with the torsen, and bitet the bullet and get the 6-speed rear, or am I alright with the torsen. (Until what point)
I like having the 3.96 gear vs the 3.19 in the 6-speed.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bob

you should be fine with what you have, the 6 spd unit isn't that much stronger than the auto TT unit.
If you still had the stock open type then yeah, you could break that especially with the v8 torque, but when you replace it with the auto tt lsd you are getting rid of the weak link.

Thanks Ihiryu. I have a 3.27 unit at the shop, but the 3.27 Gear isn't going to make the unit itself any stronger. I actually like the stock 3.96 gear performance wise, but what I'm worried about is breaking the smaller unit.
LOL already broke the stoke open unit. spider gear came off, locked the ring n pinion, and broke the input shaft on the auto trans. It was an expensive break :-(
Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of solid mounting the diff to help stop wheel hop. Any thought about a solid mount vs rubber.
Other then it making the car noisy.

It happens more often than you would think you can only spin so much power through one wheel for so long before it literally breaks itself. The torsen unit takes care of most of that though, and also the higher gearing does place more stress on it but it should hold up to a good amount of abuse still.

I broke the stock carrier Doing burnouts. No real power on it. The torson I know can multiply torque from the spinning tire to the non spinning tire. I heard it was 5X the torque and 500Ft-Lbs was the limit to be careful at as it could in thery multiple to 2500 ft-lbs, but that would have to be a perfect spinning tire wheel hop thing I'm assuming. With somewhat equal tracation I have herad they are fairly strong.
I don't have any real world experience. with this though, and was hoping someone might have more advice.
