Default Puzzled on Tach Connection on 1UZ for Idle Check

I have a old tach/dwell meter that has only 2 terminal clips, black (-) & red (+).
Lexus manual shows pic (attached) that has 3 wires to tach: 1 to battery +, 1 to battery -, and a 3rd wire to terminal IG (-) of diagnostic port.

Question is: can I use my old tach (with 2 wires) to measure idle speed or must I have a different type?
