Default Mass Air Flow sensor cleaning gone wrong.

I stubbornly used CNC MAF cleaner on my 92 SC300's MAF sensor. Now it is running rich, to where a bit of smoke is coming out of the exhaust at idle. Is there a way to get rid of this, or do I have to buy an new sensor?

It was fixed. I got the MAF from the SC400 we have laying around. Switched them out and it worked perfectly.

I didn't know they were interchangeable.

be careful if the 400 has a bigger inner diameter meter, could lean your car out

I double checked, they were 100% identical. Thank you for the heads up though.

there is no good way to clean a Karman maf, its not like a hotwire where you just shoot the resistor with cfc cleaner until its clean and let it dry. There are some reflective surfaces deep down which need to be mirror reflective. IF you have shot stuff in there give it a while for all the residues to completely get out, and hopefulyl it will work again.

That's what I'm going to do with the original MAF. Should have read the can, where it said "do not use on most Lexus cars."

yeah its funny how they started to add that to the back of the can. I actually think windex may be a better solution but try that one at your own risk. you want something that wont leave a streak or residue and wont harm the sensors. personally I think those are the worst maf's ever especially when it comes to cleaning, but if you give it a few days to air out it may come back to life.

Any update? My car maf may need a cleaning too. I realize this thread is very old, but going through everything before I do anything to my car. My car isn't going anywhere tomorrow, might want to clean this thing. My gas mileage is at like 10mpg I know it's horrible. Trying to do some cheap fixes. Another problem is it's super cold right now in NY.

No I have not just yet, I got a few other fixes to do first mainly power steering. Then I'm going to get a full tune up after using some sea foam. Then I'm going to get a new intake, and slowly get to everything else I'm really just gathering info right now and adding these things to my "to do" list.

Alright, well, since the posting of this thread, I have found that the car does indeed run rich with the SC400 MAF sensor. I will try the SC300 one this weekend, if not, I will try to find one in the junkyard. If you really feel you should clean it, use compressed air.
