Question speedometer subassembly gear

i recently changed out my VSS's in my auto 97sc3 the 2pin plug sensor is magnetic and gave no issues, however when i changed the other one 3pin plug sensor the subassembly gear came out with it, i put it into the new sensor and went to put it in, speedo doesnt work on test drive, pull the sensor back out and try to put the sub assembly in and it falls into the tranny so i ordered a new one, is there a write up or has anyone ever replaced theirs and can offer some insight as how to properly do this so i dont lose another one?
