Default can a 1jz sound like this?

this is of a 2jz-gte single turbo with RPS header and T66 turbo kit.

most 1jz i hear aren't nearly as full sounding as a 2jz... but i know the RPS header really differentiates the sound qualities of the 2jz...

i have the RPS header for the 2jz... now i'm wondering, if i can cut the flange off of it and weld it to a 1jz flange/manifold, if it would sound like that or not?

It's not so much the manifold that makes the jz sound like that but rather the cams as 1j cams suck now my statement assumes that you are already on a single turbo with a tubular header?
That sound will never happen on the stock twins.

The 1jz will naturally want to be higher pitched simply because of displacement. There are differences in ports that will never really be reproducible on a 1jz so the simple is no, they will never sound identical.

However...

The firing order is the same and the engine layout is the same. This has a drastic effect of sound. Mufflers can alter pitch greatly. Certain "musclecar" associated mufflers (Hooker, Borla, Bassani, Magnaflow) tend to have a deeper sound because of larger muffler 'volumes' vs the higher pitched Greddy, HKS and Blitz generics. Diameter of piping has a similar effect. You can get quite close with the right combo of manifold, turbo and exhaust.

That being said, that Supra actually sounds quite similar to a 1JZ which, IMHO, sounds better than it's bigger (and to avoid argument ) clearly superior 2JZ-GTE brother.

i bet if you put the same turbo and turbo manifold, downpipe/exhaust on a 1jz and 2jz you wouldnt be able to tell the difference.

Holy crap I was thinking about this exact video a couple days ago and wondered where I'd find it, one of my favorite 2Jz sounds ever! This used to be HKS's example video on an aftermarket site for their exhaust. Old video but still sounds great.

As for trying to transcript the 2J, Id say using the same setup as best you can would get you close but it'll never sound the same. As others have stated, you can't go wrong with either motor, sound wise..

thanks guys...

that sound is definitely from the tubular manifold.. specific manifold that is.. the RPS header.. no other manifold for the supra makes it sound like that.. they mentioned, it was due to the pretty equal length long tubes but also the thinner sidewalls on the tubing that makes it have that unique awesome sound!!

the hks Ti exhaust makes it sound a bit throatier.. perfect combo...

so the limiting factor on the 1jz is the cams? if i got an HKS T51r turbo, with the 1jz, when will it spool and hit full boost? i know on the 2jz it hits full boost around 5-5500 RPM..

RPS HEADER = best sounding exhaust manifold ever for a supra (2jz-gte)

Yes stock cams only makes power up to 6200 rpm.

What do you mean by full boost? t51r will be laggy on the 1jzgte regardless no matter what cams you get
You basically need headwork if you wanna have fun with that turbo, the 1jzgte intake and exhaust ports are tiny compare to the 2jzgte and 2jzge.

Well the T51R came in 2 formats A KAI or an SPL there is a rather large difference between the 2 like a 70mm KAI and a 76mm SPL.

Also the RPS manifold is no longer produced and has unequal length runners but as a possible benefit Sound performance has created a repro with equal runners and has figured out how to control Boost creep with dual gates.

thx all..

yeah i think i'm going to stick to what i really want and not comprimise with the 1jz.... 2jz-gte 6spd or r154 if i can beef it up to 800hp.. i'm sure the 1jz is a great motor also.. but with the 2jz i will already have the proven RPS tuned/header sound and have a little extra displacement as well.

i have the RPS header already i just need to weld a vband flange on it and waste gate flange... i would probably get the T51r SPL bb.. and if i can interchange the Vband turbo with GT35r (tial housing) that'd be sweet for road course, faster spool up etc.
