Default Highest Horsepower Numbers from W58 NA-T Guys? Post up!

I tried searching and didn't see a thread specifically listing hp numbers from guys running the W58 and I'm working on a possible project to upgrade the W58 trans....

Currently I'm running a NA-T setup that dynoed 380whp with the previous owner and he has been through 2 W58s before he sold the car to me....I'm looking on doing a 500-550whp build and I'm not really interested in doing the R154 or V160 and would like to see what can be done with the W58.

I've noticed nobody seems to offer a trans build upgrade for the W58 and I spoke to one of the top DSM trans builders in the country about building up the W58 since the V160 and R154 swaps can be much more expensive and extensive than it would be to build a W58...he wasn't familiar with any aftermarket support on the W58, but did say he would be open to building one and maybe looking into the weak points and seeing if he can get some new, beefier parts manufactured to help us W58 guys out...

So that got me to thinking and I'd like to see what CL members with NA-T setups and running W58s are putting down for power? Please list your power and if it is the original W58 trans or list how many you have been through.

W58's dont hold stock 2jzgte power for long so I would say anything more than that and its toast.

There is a guy on SF with a swapped SC (kuzi) and he is putting 512whp through his so far. People put a lot through them, but they are time bombs at that point.

I have about 12000 miles on my 2jzgte swap w/ a w58. The W58 has 210k on it as with my car. It made 400 whp. Those are daily driven miles and I dont run the **** out of it. But I do get into it occasionally. I did recently put a TT auto LSD in and 285 tires so I would assume thats really putting the pressure on the trans. Only time will tell for me.

It's all about luck it seems with the w58 but more times then not they will grenade on you sooner or later with 375+hp. sure there are some people saying 450hp daily with no problems but there are more people who blew up at the range 400.

I'm confused.

I understand that a v160 swap is very pricey but the R154 is pretty darn cheap. I highly doubt anyone could make a stronger gearset for the w58 that costs any less than a R154 that has routinely exceeded the 700tq mark with nothing worse than notchy shifts and a weak rear seal.

A quick scan of ebay shows R154's going for ~$750 including shipping charges to anywhere in the USA. Can a w58 really be built for less than that??? Most gearsets I've seen for other trannys easily eclipse the $2500-$4500 budget.

I'm running 430rwhp and 405 rwtq, seems to be holding fine for now. My w58 has held 380 rwhp and 350 rwtq for about 50k miles before i redid my turbo setup to its current power. Also I dont drive the car as much anymore, and i didnt drive the crap out of it, but i will get on it once in awhile.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^+100000 You are 100% correct .

there is an australian company that makes a full rebuilt kit for the W58 and it's around $5500.00

It will break , don't waste your time and money. My friend went through (5) W58s waste of time if you keep replacing the same weak parts with another weak one

Agreed. The R154 is a fantastic transmission for a mild budget SC. Those guys chasing higher hp can probably afford a V160 when it comes down to it.

I agree that the W58 is less than ideal....just looking for roll call on power numbers and will go from there I suppose. Dropping $6-$10K on a V160 swap isn't in most people's budget and the R154 is a great alternative obviously....The trans builder I talked to was ball parking around $2k-$2500 to do an upgraded setup, but again that was ball parking until we dig further....maybe I will be the guinnea pig.

V160 swap is really not bad if you gonna eventually make some decent power .I am scare to put 700whp on my R154 because i'll be asking for trouble, it may take but for how long ..

A bone stock R154 with low miles and Redline shock proof will do the job just fine if you are looking for 450-500whp.
I didn't open my R154 , it's bone stock with 81k miles on it so far so good !

Omar bite the dog that bite you, we have done several 1j and 2j cars making 7's without any severe complications the shift forks are the concern as well as the 1st gear sycnro just don't launch the car at every traffic light.

^^^ That's correct Rog , But i don't wanna spend $ 1700-2700 on Clutch for an R154 to hold the power i am looking for but then end up with a broken Tranny...And get stuck with $2700 used clutch, even with the MC parts they still break at higher tq level.
Maybe it's just me but i don't trust them past 6XX WTQ. I can save that $2700 i was going to spend one that clutch+ sell my R154 swap before i break it . i don't doubt you made than kind of power with them because i have seen Vids of cars you had build, i just wanna go through that !
