Default Tranny rebuild?

i have a 1992 sc400 auto transmission and it needs rebuilt fluid is black it is unmovable wont engage any of it's gears.

so next step is to cal around town and see how much to get my transmission rebuilt first place so far told me $1800 with a 1 year warranty.

So my question is how much has other people paid to get their transmission rebuilt and what price should i be looking for. any input would be greatly appreciated

It actually might be cheaper for you to just buy a used transmission. You should be able to find a really clean one under $500. I've seen them go for as low as $150 locally for a decent condition transmission with 100,000 miles on it.

Where in Alabama are you? I just sold my last tranny for the 400. I may be able to find you a used one for cheap minus a finders fee.. lol

I would find some junk yards in Birmingham first.... GL and let me know if I can help you find one.

I had it done about three weeks ago and it was $2200 after tax. So, your 1800 is a really good deal. Make sure you get your torque converter back so you can send it to Lextreme. The results of the Lextreme TC weren't very dramatic, but it's still an improvement and the tranny shop might give you a break on replacing the TC. It was cheaper to have Lextreme give me the higher stall one as opposed to buying a new one.

Also, DO NOT listen to the people who say to buy a used one. It's cheaper in the outset, but you don't know what problems that tranny has and you may be in the same boat in a short amount of time if you plan on keeping your car. Plus you would have spent all the money in shipping and labor to install a new one only to shell out the $1800 all over again later. Unless the used tranny comes with a warranty, I wouldn't suggest it.

thanks ajm. guess me and you are the oddballs in buying SCs with lots of problems because evryone else seems to never have major porblems with thiers. need to find a tranny shop that will let me pay it off in installments or something because i will only have about $500 cash to put down and thats IF i can sell my wrecked truck for that much
