The service manuals recommend removing them together...but I hadnt realized I needed new valve cover gaskets until the TB was off. That is hell on earth, trying to get the EGR disconnected and then the y-pipe out...getting it back on was even worse.

I only managed to replace one valve cover gasket, I didn't have a big enough wrench to remove the egr, is it really that bad?

Its a pain...but I think if you take off the y-pipe and TB together, you may not need to remove the big EGR nut. Rather you can remove the two smaller ones connecting to the y-pipe, these are easier to get to.
