mine did'nt leak at 500whp but when i went to 620whp it did leak

 

It's Bad Quicksc4, I basically fear for my life every time I drive it, which has basically stopped now.

I got the trans on a barter, so I'm not too surprised.

Plus the OEM Toyota R154 Rebuild kit is about $240 right now.

Which makes it sort of mandatory with these units becoming more scarce and older, doesn't it?

But as far as the seal leak, that's what I'm betting.

The gearset and shafts have more than enough weight/ force by themselves to peel the rubber over, I can't see why more torque wouldn't make it leak more if that were so.

I know i wasn't crazy, when this was happening to my car i went thtough the same crap my old car made over 500 whp 17psi.

But it doesnt leak when i run on the WG spring.

I will be stuck at 500rwhp a little while then...

 

I went six speed cause i want to fully build the engine ,hopefully reach the 1k whp mark. when the car was in the 500who area i rev it up to 6200rpm's (no point to go higher with stock jdm's cams) when i upgrade cams and valve train 600whp area i was reving to 7400 rpms . I think thats they source of the problem

 

well i figured id update my issue. Been running 22-24psi/640whp and not a drop has been on the driveway!! i put it on the hoist today and the rear seal was weaping very little "ive never changed it" but dry as a bone otherwise!!
for anyone that has the fluid coming out the shifter housing like i did i would try the sponge...lol

So you are saying that the R154 is sponge-worthy?

Interesting! Are you sure the sponge is releasing enough oil back to the case to avoid starvation? Have you checked the fluid level after a long hard run to see how much the sponges hold?

 

well i beat the hell out of it the hole way to my shop, put it in the air, checked for leaks, then drained it to inspect if any peice's of sponge would come out...lol
i got almost 3 quarts out of it so id say its fine.

if you have the non "soarer" extended trans it is pointless as it vents through the shifter housing

Hey Guys, any updates on leaky r154's at high power levels?

Since the early year r154 vents at the shifter, does it vent "better" than the chaser version does and thus prevents leaks from the tailshaft output seal?

Can a larger breather or multiple breathers be added to the chaser r154 to remove pressure to avoid leaks out of the rear seal?

My goals with my car are upwards of 600whp eventually.

 

Mine is an early non-tripod version and it leaked like crazy on even the stock twins.
After switching to the W58 rear seal its been good for the last year. Not sure why its holding up better this time. A few drops here and there but I'm not adding any fluid.
