Unhappy Engine Compatibility for 92 SC300

I have a 1992 SC300 with a bone stock 2JZGE engine. The problem is that the head gasket is pretty much toast and I have a horrid engine knock. I am on a shoestring budget and have found TONS of less than 100k used engines for around 500-600.

My problem:
Every time I read the description, is says something like 93-97 models, or 94-98 models. So, what years (other than 92) have the same engine and can just bolt up to my existing and functional automatic trans? I am hoping to just pull the old busted one and sell for parts (salvage what looks good) and pop the newly purchased one in.

Example:
On ebay, there is an item listed as "JDM Toyota 2JZGE Engine Toyota Supra Non Turbo JZA80 Supra 2JZ-GE 94-98"
Im not just sticking with ebay, its just the easiest to start my searches...

Im new with the 2JZ so any help would be lovely!
Thanks in advance,
Aaron J:

the 2JZ was introduced in the MKIV Supra in 1993.5, the SC came to the US in 1992 with a 2JZ in it from the get go (In Japan our car is known as the Soarer and it came with a 1JZ...whole other story). Just know that if you get a motor from a JZA80 chassis, you're going to have some wiring on your hands because the Supra and SC (while VERY similar) are not direct clones. The chassis code for the SC is JZZ30/JZZ31. Also, don't get a motor from JZS161, that's the GS300 which also won't fit without modification.

The only difference that was made was in the later 90's, 1998 I believe, they added VVT-i to the motor changing it up a little bit.

Since you have a 1992, I would highly suggest getting a motor from the range of 1992-1995 because you are OBD1 and DO NOT want to go through the hassle of switching to OBD2.

You sir, are very smart... thanks! I found a local "pick-and-pull" with my EXACT motor fully in-tact (no sensors but all mine are good so I can bolt them up) and it only costs $325. I figure I will get a gasket set and do my own "rebuild" and swap the complete engines afterwards. GREAT knowledge though about the models and such. Thanks so much for your help!

You're welcome. There's a TON of DIY tutorials on this site. Use the Advanced Search function and you should be able to find some good stuff! $325 is not bad at all! Get yourself a gasket kit and go to town on that motor.
