Default Manual shifter removal to fill tranny fluid

I was wondering if anybody has found a thread on here or has some tips on the procedure to removing the shifter to fill the tranny fluid instead of through the filler hole.

After reading a ton online I have came to the conclusion that more people say it is easier to fill through the shifter hole...I do have a 5speed, this is one thing I have never done before.

Just curious if it is a bit of a process or if it is pretty standard. I have tried searching the forums to see if anyone else has asked this question but can't find what im looking for, any help would be appreciated.

you can but you cant tell how much fluid is in there you are only suppose to fill it till it reaches the fill hole.

taking apart the shifter is pretty easy and straight forward a buncha gromets and 4 screws and 4 bolts i believe i cant remeber exactly

When I did mine it just consisted of taking off the 4 screws that hold the boot in place and the other 4 screws holding the shifter in place. (I do not have the center console but that should be easy.)

I think for the R154 there was a 3 liter capacity, so thats what I poured in.

good luck.

I thought the SC300 has a shifter extension that won't let you fill from the top on the W58 tranny? You can do it from under the car (where you'll be to drain it anyways) with a $7 hand pump from Autozone. The capacity is ~2.6 quarts I believe.

the extension doesnt really matter its sealed and the fluid has no choice but to go down. taken apart the tranny before and by looking at it i dont see a reason why you cant as long as you do so slowly.
