Default sc 300 rpm problem?

own a 1997 sc400. have an opportunity to buy a 1992 sc300. on the test drive the 4 speed auto goes over 4000 rpm at highway speeds (70-75). this seems a lot to me. i think the overdrive isn't kicking in or it's the trans. the dealer/seller says that is normal. any help or comments?

That is not normal at all. It does sound like OD is not engaging. Either you talk them way down knowing you will have to swap/fix the trans, or move on.
