Default Where should I begin diagnosing loss of power?

Been reading tons of "Loss of power" threads and it seems like my problem could be everything from vaccum hose to bad ecu, fuel pump, caps or blown head gasket. Had a friend check it out who has experience with domestics (not toyotas though) and he thinks it's clogged cats. I'll provide as much info as I can.
Where should I start... Thought about removing intake system to locate the hissing and exhaust from back to front to locate clog.

Symptoms:
-Ran fine one evening, next morning go turn on and no power and a hissing sound on passenger side of engine. (no loose vacuum hoses found)
-Idles at 0.5k
-Full Throttle takes up to 1.5k while driving and as high as I'll let it parked
-Actually has more power when gas is half way although still can't get it over 1.5k so 25 mph max
-Very strong smell of fuel and my friend thinks he smelled exhaust in the car after he revved it hard
-White smoke sometimes out of tailpipes
-Small amount of smoke on top corner of passenger side (top left hand corner if standing in front)
-Hissing sound coming from what it seems under where passenger cap/rotor is
-When I turn the key half way, hear 1 click on passenger side of engine and 3 clicks on driver side
-When listening under the car, entire exhaust system sounds like it is just passing air and the noise out the pipes is much more hollow/deep than before

Car details
-93 SC400
-196k miles
-water pump/timing done at 140k
-Never overheated or had any issues
-Fluids all seem fine, just had oil change about 3 weeks ago no leaks found
-Don't see cats glowing like many have stated after driving for a while

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Bad ecu and clogged cats. Thats my opinion. Pull your out of the passengee side floor board and inspect the capacitors for bad ones. Then check compression on all eight cylinders. Then recheck the oil when hot and see if milky or similar. Report back

Unplug one coil at a time and see if it makes a difference in the engine while idling/free revving. If it does, there is your problem. My 92 sc400 did this exact same thing. $64 coil and it ran wonderfully.

Thanks for the responses guys. I've been busy car shopping after work so I haven't had a chance to look into it. I'm going to get a compression tester for the weekend. Never done it before but I learn everything on youtube.
I'll post my results, might help someone in the future.
