This started happening to me a few months ago. And the problem got worse...

...and worse

...and worse

and finally the engine would simply stall and shut off on me at stop lights. I would restart the motor and everything would be fine for a few minutes. Ran an OBD1 scanner....code was the MAF. I replaced the MAF 3 weeks ago and the problem hasn't returned. I did not have a cel or any indication that something was wrong other than this persistent issue. Run a code scanner and see if you pull any codes.

I'm not sure if this will help... but this happened to me after I took my car in for a service.. . the car would start to idle really bad and car would start to shake and almost die out on me when I'm at a stop. I took it to the mechanic that did the service for me and said it was the wire harness (I'm thinking he didn't hook it back up correctly). After that it was fixed, no more rough idles.

There is a DIY on how to pull the codes and what each number means. If you have $25, you can buy a real OBD1 scanner from Ebay.

That almost sounds like the fuel pump ECU. It hasn't died yet has it?

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead.
But I'm having this same problem. When I start braking the rpms drop really low. Then when I'm stopped the rpms will get really rough and jumpy. Every time the fans go on the car just shuts off. I have no CEL but i do have a custom exhaust. I'm going to try to change the maf sensor and see if that helps. Anyone know a good place to get a replacement maf sensor?
