Well, no dice. I put the turbos back on, put a breather on the pass side vc, and took it for a run. It is smoking again! I guess it has to be the turbos at this point. It does not smoke with them off, so it shouldn't be bottom end right? I checked the breather filter and there was no oil in it, so I must not have terrible blow-by...

Jeremy at SFS said it sounded like the twins when I emailed him with the symptoms. This sucks hard.

hmmmm well im certainly no mechanic by any means but i find it hard to believe you swapped out two bad twin turbos for a set of two bad turbos---the odds are againt this is all.

good luck hope you get to the bottom of it

I agree the odds seem against it, but I am out of ideas. I took the turbos off and it doesn't smoke. Put them on, it smokes. I don't know what other conclusion to draw.

Ok, yet another shot without the twins on the car. This time, I let the car sit and idle for over 20 minutes. It was good and hot.

Well, it smokes when you rev it. I have a tired bottom end apparently. That explains the oil soaked turbo inlet as well. I suppose the engine is getting a rebuild.

Oh well, I guess it's better to happen this way than catastrophically.

I am trying to decide if I should just ghetto re-ring it or not...I am pretty broke right now and can't afford to go all out. I may just hone it, re-ring it, stick some bearings in it, and give it a shot... The broke redneck in me is telling me to do it

Rings are NOT likely. Its not a 350 chevy.

Good luck with the rebuild.

If you know what IS likely, please share. What else causes excessive blow-by that you are aware of?

My car is doing the EXACT same thing, although I am NA-T. Had this happen to me before like 2-3 years ago. Replaced the turbo and it fixed the problem. The seal on the exhaust housing was bad, now my current one is doing it. But hey $300 turbo, so I'm not complaining.

Yeah it is a tossup. Turbo, rings, valve seals/guides. It could be any of the above really. Removed turbo and it still smokes after prolonged idle, so even if the turbos are bad, they are not the only problem. VSS are new and no startup smoke. Noticable oil spray from blow-by in turbo inlet points me to piston rings, or possibly pistons themselves. If anyone has better ideas, please feel free to share.

This is not the first oil control ring failure I have heard of in a JZ. While not common, it does seem to happen. Excessive carbon buildup could have caked the rings to the pistons, and seeing as this is a JDM engine that did have some sludge in the head, it is quite possible that this is an issue.

At any rate, the engine is out, and I am going through it. I will report back with the autopsy results.

The worst part is that the engine runs really well. If I was not concerned with a puff of smoke here and there I would leave it be, but it really bugs me

Sorry to hear that bro, i would just rebuild it and be done remember you tighten up the top end so the botton need the same love...
Do it once and you won't have to worry about it, make sure you replace the oil pump after you spend some serious money on the rebuild.

I replaced the oil pump about 3k ago when I did the swap. I think I am going to reuse it. It does suck, but at least this way it will all be fresh and I can go about my plans knowing whats in there.
