Default R154 disassembled: Is this normal? (video)

Before I took everything apart I noticed that the input shaft moves. I have no idea if this is normal or not. I wanted to see the health of the gears, bearings, and synchros anyway, so I decided to tear the transmission cases apart.

When I finally got it opened, there was no metal shavings at all. Just normal carbon build up on the wall of each of the tranny case. Gears and all other parts seems fine but this play or movement of the input shaft makes me feel there's something wrong.

I made a video to see what I'm talking about. I have no idea how a transmission works whatsoever.

All of the manual transmissions I have ever been into come apart like that once the input retainer is removed. I am not familiar with the R154 specifically, but I think you are fine.

Now you said that before you took it apart it moved. Does it move like that when its all together? If so that is not normal lol. Some very minor movement both radial and axial can be expected from normal bearing tolerances.

Yours doesn't move like that when its together does it? I'm going to have to go give mine a wiggle now and see what it does. The bearing retainer should keep it in place when the tranny is together.

Yes, when I got it with a bellhousing on, it moves forwards and backwards but there was no play if I move it up or down.

Wait, do you have the same tranny?

I have a R154 waiting to go in, so I can go check it out later. I do not remember that kind of crazy endplay on mine and I am pretty sure I checked it when I got it. So with everything together you had 1/4 inch of endplay?! That is interesting...

With everything back on, I don't know. It might lessen the play since I have to put back the circlip/retainer.

Are you planning to take yours off?

I'm going to a local transmission shop sometime next week to check this out.

I am not going to take the retainer off. I am just curious to see how much endplay there is with the retainer on. I would bet it is minimal (less than .1" I would think).

I have built BW T5s and they call for a target of .00" endplay. If there is enough movement allowed on the input, it will effect 3rd to 4th syncronization among other things, so I highly doubt that 1/4" of movement is normal.

Of course I have never been in one of these transmissions, so I may be missing something.

Once the retainer is removed, you should actually be able to pull the input shaft right off of the output shaft without issue. They should simply slide together.

EDIT: On a T5 you can pull the input off of the output because there is a section of dog teeth that is missing to allow clearance of the countershaft. When you were pulling on your input, I bet the only thing stopping it from coming all the way off was the input gears syncro teeth hitting the countershaft gear right below it.

My R154 has .013" of end play with the retainer on. Just to give you an idea, that is a little thinner than the thickness of a matchbook cover(AKA points setting device)

New question. Is there such thing that gears/synchros could be disalligned? I accidentallly pulled one of the gear near the output shaft when I was trying to wiggle it off the transmission case.

Ok, I accidentally pulled this gear ( circled )

And this is what happened:

It supposed to be like this when I took off the other casing:

What the hell should I do now. This suck ***.

You should be able to just rotate the gears and slide it back in.
