So what is needed for swapping a 98 1UZ into a 93 SC400? My gf's SC400 stock engine is getting long in the tooth so I was wondering if its worthwhile to just rebuild or drop a newer low-mileage 1UZ.

It will not work, unless you have the entire ignition system, keys, ecu, & anything else from the 98 car. The security system on the 98 car is way more advanced than the 92-97 cars. If you dont have the keys,ignition,ecu, wiring harness & abunch of other stuff it will not work. Sorry for the bad news.

absolutely right about that... this project worked for me because i had the whole car to swap components with, very involved project unless you have someone to customize the wire harness for you among other things
