Default question for the w58 guys

hey guys
i did a 5spd / 1jzvvti swap into my SC400 (yeah)

i'm using a 95+ sc300/supra W58 (with the external shifter).
i'm using 95+ sc300 engine mounts and arms on the block.

well, the problem is the shifter sits about 1" too far BACK, not forward... to where it barely touches the BACK of the shifter boot when it's in 2nd/4th/reverse, not too far forward like most people have a problem with.
i would prefer to not use different motor mount arms, as that would require moving some things in the engine bay and it would possibly make my driveshaft too short.
it seems like i need the w58 with the shorter shifter housing, but i'm just confused.

anyone have any idea why this would happen?

All the SC w58's should end up in more or less the same spot.
with the external shifter w58, the shifter is straight, not bent so I dont know if you can find a bent shifter to give you that one inch.
I know when I had my short shifter on the throw was at least half and you can get them pretty easily for the remote w58, so maybe you could do that and call it a day, you probably would not touch the boot anymore.

With the old style w58 you would have a bit more shifter selection, but its not really worth it at this point

as for the short shifter stuff:
whether the shifter is 5" tall or 10" tall, it's still going to be sitting 1" too far back down at the base, so it would still hit the plastic surround piece. know what i mean?

i'm just trying to figure out why the shifter cup is 1" too far back.

maybe i have the wrong mounts?

I agree that your sifter is too far back, but I disagree that it would still hit.
I change out my shifter all the time, the short shifter moves so little from its center position (even if yours 1" back) that I can hardly tell what gear its in just by looking at it. The pivot point remains the same on both shifters, so taking off height definately results in less forward and backward motion, but more force is required to move the smaller lever.

As for why its 1" too far back, sorry can't answer that one, just trying to let you know an easy way out.

Is the shifter straight or swan style? For remote mount shifters, it must be straight.

I was thinking about it again while staring at my shifter and im not so confident it will help all that much.
I would suspect it must have something to do with the mounts. did the trans cross member line up correctly or did you have to modify it? quickgs300 knows all about the different mounts =)
