$250 to repair exhaust, does that seem right?

So I have an exhaust leak where the resonators split off. Today I finally got around to bringing it to a muffler shop called Classic Customer Exhaust in Holyoke Ma and he is going to charge me $250 to replace all the piping from the first cat back to the mufflers and remove the 2nd cat. Does that seem like a good price?

Also he said I dont need the 2nd cat and I wont have any issues with emissions or CEL...........is that correct?

Oh im in Mass and its a 97 SC300

as long as there isnt an oxygen sensor behind the 2nd cat you should be alright with the check engine light. i dont think you do though. 250 sounds kinda high, but if his work is quality i dont think its too bad. i got charged 80 bucks just to have some pipes welded together. so for material and labor i wouldnt think twice.

What size pipping? Because I got a 3" from headers back with a cat for 350.00 I brought my mufflers.

When i did a 3" pipe from behind the cat to the muffler is was $70. Why dont you just buy someones stock piping? Like mines..hehe so i can get a custom 3".

There is an oxygen sensor about 2 inches after the flange just below the first cat. I'm really not sure about his quality of work. I was just passing by on my way to Spartan muffler and I happened to see this shop so I decided to stop by and see what he had to say, I have always liked giving local businesses a chance.

I never made it to Spartan because as I was pulling out of Classic Custom I got a call to pick up my nephew from school lol.

I believe it is 2.5" piping but I could be wrong, it is stock SC300 pipes

Do you have pictures?

Ok so while I was changing my Diff oil I decided to take a few pictures so its a little more clear.

This is where the crack is

From this weld point (black line) down to the resonators is going to be replaced with a straight pipe which will delete the second cat.

I hope this helped explain what he wants to do.

I cant tell from the second picture, is there a flange on the part that connects to the first cat? Why does that look so much different than mine does? Also is there a bung for the 3rd o2 sensor?

OP - don't go 3" if your car is stock...please :p Do you just want to redo your exhaust or what is your goal?

Right now all I wanna do is stop sounding like a tank going down the street lol. This is my daily driver and at this point in time I'm slowly redoing all worn parts like exhaust, brakes, suspension, engine and all its components. So in a nutshell I just want to car to last me another 100k miles.

I have a few other toys to speed around in, but there is just something about the SC that i like and it makes a nice DD.

I'm really debating on buying a welder and teaching myself how to weld. I would like to build my own exhaust, but thats just a thought

No theres no bung for the 3rd o2 sensor, but there is a flange to connect to the cat converters. Which piece do you need? 1st half sencond half?

soarer13oy Apr 8, 2010 03:02 PM

its because my car is obd1

Sup2jzgte Apr 8, 2010 03:06 PM

I would need both peices

soarer13oy Apr 8, 2010 03:26 PM

your exhaust is that messed up? Mine looks different because it has the heat shields still in place.

Yeah....12 New England winters reeks havoc on exhausts, it looks like the resonators are different as well

soarer13oy Apr 8, 2010 03:40 PM
