Default Exhaust Heat shield Question

So i have in fact searched and only found a little information but heres the story... The heat shield between the header and the cat before the y-pipe is coming loose and is rattling at an annoying dB

Can i remove this?? I have been told/read a number of different things. I have been told that it's worthless, that i may experience vapor lock if I remove it.. Whats the verdict? removable?

Also, i dont have many tools so I am curious if it safe to use a grinder to get it off? Thanks for the help, let me know

i think its like 3 or 4 regular bolts. you are talking about the silver manifold heat shield.
you can take it off. it may get a little warmer in your engine bay but just make sure no wires or anything is close to touching the manifold (or your hands). you could just try tightening the bolts as well.
I have a large turbo about twice as hot sitting in the spot where that thing used to be.

no idea what you mean by vapor lock, its just a cover. if you have rattles in that are make sure to get under the car and check the front hanger for the front pipe/downpipe. the hanger goes between the transmission and the front exhaust flange. sometimes it can crack and man does it rattle.

its 4 10mm bolts iirc...take it off, you shouldnt feel much of a difference in heat..but like Ali said make sure there are no wires or anything close.

I got it off with the 10mm only to find that the pipe (pipe between the y-pipe and the header) wasnt even connected to the header! Unfortunately the flange broke on me. Thanks for the help guys, im gonna get it welded back up soon.

Yeah its better to have it on than off. The plastic intake parts are right above the ex mani, thats not very safe.

sounds like you found the culprit. you may want to consider buying an aftermarket header depending on how badly the original is broken.
doing a weld repair job on the original may not last very long unless you entirely cut out the broken (and most likely severely rusted) part of the pipe and weld in a new section.

dont forget to inspect your o2 sensors and since your exhaust was disconnected for a while make sure there are no debris in the pipe that will shoot through your cat the first time you fire it up.
