Oh wow. Ghosts!

Remove the starter relay and check it first. It must be stuck on "on" position all the time.

Smoke indicates hot wires, hot wires will melt together so they create connections that will do all sorts of wacky things. Try tracing your ignition switch wires and see if any are melted. They should all be in the main harness running from the engine fuse box to interior fuse block. Most of this wiring is located in the driver's side wheel well. Thats where all my electrical gremlins were hiding anyways.

I would check the spot where the smoke was coming from and check that whole wiring cluster. Some wires have to be melted together to make that short circuit. Has he car been is any accidents that would cause the wiring to be modified or anything of that nature? I would try and get hold hold of some wiring diagrams or buy a dealer wiring book off of ebay if there is one for sale. It would help you narrow down the circuits that would be on at the time and possibly start the car if shorted together.
