Unhappy SC400 Trans whining and clunks

My 93 SC400 has recently started to make a "whirring" noise similar to an electric motor I guess, when in drive and accelerating,Sounds like its coming from the bellhousing area. It has also started clunking when coming to a stop, but only when the overdrive is on, if I turn it off there isn't even a clunk or any problem(except for the whirring).Could this be the torque converter? Or is it time to start shopping for a new trans?
Thanks,
Philip

it may be your TC, hopefully nothing else like shift solenoids and all that. how's your transmission fluid level? Ever had any overheating issues? I just had my tranny fully rebuilt because of a previous overheating problem. EVERYTHING in my transmission went to ****

Fluid is full and clean, not burnt or dark at all.I've only had the car for about 6months so I guess it could've been overheated by the P.O.

I have that similar clunk when coming to a stop, too. My initial thought was that it may be the tranny mounts... It seems like you would not hear the clunk so much if you didn't feel it. I don't know what it could be. I'd like to see what someone could say on this.

I was thinking tranny mount too so I went ahead and ordered that today and Ill be putting it in Monday So Ill let you know how that goes. The clunk seems to have gotten worse so it makes sense that it could be the mount. I know my mount is very compressed and probably contributing to some of my driveline vibrations

Picked up the mount today. #12371-50030 and found out I paid way too much even with my 15% discount. You can get the mount from some Toyota dealers(Mine wouldn't order it) or on ebay for $47.Going to install it Thursday morning and hope it helps

Any more info on this? And what about the torque converter angle? I'm having a sound only issue that popped up two days ago. In my case it's a whirring noise (somewhat like an electric motor would sound) that increases with gearbox speeds ie; it rises and falls with the changing of gears. The sound in terms of location is def around the Bell Housing area of the tranny underneath the car. Other than that though, the car operates as normal, normal shifting - pretty much normal power (maybe a little less than when I bought it but who knows over that long a period of time.. 3 years).

I hate new noises though - makes me VERY uneasy as I drive 200 to 300 miles one way about 2 times a month for my work in state. Whirring noises from my transmission seem to be a *bad* sign.
