Default Lets Discuss - 3.23 Gears in MY SC400

Well first off, when my SC400 was auto, cruising at near 3k rpms on the highway wasnt horrible.

Now that it has a W58 in it, its not about 3500 at the same speed.

3.73 gears are expensive and hard to find, but I found a 3.23 GS400 pumpkin local for dirt cheap.

So going from 3.93(?) to 3.23 is a drastic change, but is it for the bad?

Currently, 1st gear spins, rather fun. 2nd gear chirps, sometimes spins a little.

I dyno'd at around 212whp/230tq before the manual swap. My buddy's MK3 1uz W58 dyno'd at 230whp/250tq, so I am guessing I am pretty close to that now.

So right now I am 1uz/W58
Within 6 months a R154 is going in
After that (this coming summer) I am working on my Twin HX35 setup, hoping for 450-500whp to start with.

Is getting the 3.23 right now a bad idea? Too sluggish off the line to warrant the boost in gas mileage?

Top speed will go from like 145 to 190 haha.

I don't think it'll be a good idea. I know there's a bunch of gear calculators online though...

The final drive in the R154 might fix your problem.

Might want to skip to the R154 now?

you can prob get away with it, but the tradeoff for a little economy up top will hurt your acceleration considerably.

With the W58 and 3.23 you will rev about 4% less in 5th gear than with the auto. It looks to me that the acceleration will still be ok as the W58 is so much lower geared than the auto. Just have to shift well I figure. I used an online calculator and figured out all RPMS for all gears for the Auto, W58 and R154 with rear ends of 3.92, 3.73, and 3.26 in all combinations and charted them. This is the calculator I used: http://www.kabamus.com/garage/gears.html
