Yes, Oil will spill out of the filter make sure you have a drain pan under it, once it's loose you can remove it from under the car.

Future reference... THE GROCERY BAG CONDOM TECHNIQUE

Get it from the top.

Crack the oil filter loose, but dont turn it enough to let oil start pouring out.

Get a plastic grocery bag, pull it from end to end and make it long and skinny.

Slide grocery bag past the filter, and then wrap the bag around the oil filter.

Try to get the opening of the bag necked up as close to the block as possible, past the filter (like putting on a condom) but let the bottom of the bag hang down to leave room for the oil that its about to collect.

While holding the bag to the filter housing with one hand, start twisting the filter loose, you'll notice oil starting to leak from the filter and filling the bag, take your time.

Keep spinning it off with one hand until the filter falls into the bag, while still holding the bag to the housing, wait for the rest of the oil to come out of the filter housing for about 20 seconds.

Grab hold and slowly pull bag/filter/oil out through the top.

BOOM. no mess.

I just go in from the top and usually it's just a quick turn and it's loose. If that doesn't work, I use one of these.

I got mine from the toyota dealer for like 7 bucks and it's metal. Or just use some sandpaper if you have trouble getting a grip on it.

I use this style at work. Fits more than just 1 size of filters, and you dont have to struggle getting the tool off of the filter once done.

just a thought... the style you posted works best for cartridge style filters found on the IS250/350s, Tundras, Avalons, Camrys, Ravs, etc....
