Default Oil leak - The remedy?

Sup guys. I have an oil leak on my sc400 and I'm not too sure what it is that needs to be fixed or if is even coming from where I see it.

It might just be trickling down. Meh.
Hopefully it's something that I can seal up easily and cheaply. Is that a word?
Cheaply. whatever. I'm broke.

Sooo, here's some pictures so that you guys can better help me out.
It's behind the oil pan and right smack dab where the tranny starts. The notch in the middle of the affected area is where the leak is most prevelant. It just trickles off to the sides of it.

no other way to fix an oil leak than to replace the seal thats leaking, that **** you dump in your oil that "stops" leaks doesnt work. so you have to find out where the leak is coming from and replace the seal

Cant really tell from the pictures, but it sounds like your rear main seal is leaking.

This is probably right, unless you're leaking atf. Eitherway you will need to pull the tranny to take a look. Replace the seal. Cheapest way is to do it yourself. The seal shouldn't be too expensive(I think), but it is no cakewalk to get this done.

If you can't, well theres no other way really. You are SOL

damnit.

I can't perform any maintenance to my car as of now. I just broke and dislocated my left wrist so it's hard to even pull up my pants.
Maybe since I'm pulling the tranny, I'll just get a w58 and swap it. man man man man.

Any way to tell the difference between oil or ATF fluid? They look the same and the consistency is pretty relative (when coming out all dirty, mind you).

Well, smell the fluid in your power steering reserviore . I believe it is ATF. Whenever I smell ATF it has like a sweet smell to it. Motor oil does not smell sweet at all. Also, usually it is a red color.

I'm pretty sure I'm right. Haha. I could be wrong though.

Wipe it with a white paper towel and look at the colour. That looks like a rear main seal leak tho.

Agreed - same issue on my 300. Turned out to be the VCG and rear main seal.

check to see if you have any oil in your plug holes....

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I guess I'll just test some things further.
Well, some additional info - My cabin gets pretty hot and I do realize that some SC's are known for blowing hot air from the foot well, but I cant feel the heat coming from the tranny tunnel. It gets annoying sometimes.

Thanks guys.

Check the back of your valve covers for blow back of oil. If nothing there then it should be your rear main seal. The color or oil used is blackish and tranny fluid is usually cranberry red . If it was in that area only it would be a oil leak or a cut tranny line cause those run on the passengers side. Rear main gaskets are around $40 and you have to take the exaust and tranny out. For the older models you have to take out the kick down cable that is attached to the throttle body. It would be more expensive to do the w58 swap then it would be to repair the rear main seal. You said you were broke so repair the rear main seal. It will only get worse don't put any oil stopper or any of that crap. G/L with that.
