Default ~ Failed functional check - No vac signal to EGR ~

I went to the smog station this afternoon to have my SC tested. Unfortunately I failed. I had about a quarter tank of C16 VP Racing fuel in there but the technician said that had nothing to do with it. Apparently there is no vacuum signal to EGR valve. I dont have a check engine light. The car is an SC300 with about 320,000 miles on the original motor. I had an EGR issue before with my brother's SC and did some research but I was never able to get a solid answer as to going about repairing the problem. Do you guys have any suggestions?

~Thanks in advance!

there is a valve on the plenum, blue or brown, that control the flow of vacuum to the egr valve.

the valve from toyota is about 100 bucks new. you can get one at the yard for about 10 bucks.

i have a spare i can send you and you can try it out.

its the same damn problem on just about every camry i have seen in a while and also some toyota 3vz and 1mz motors.

that valve is just a solenoid that lets vacuum in.

i think the one for egr is on the back of the plenum by the wire harness.

come to think of it its not the brown valve. the brown valve is to control the butterfly thats in the plenum.

those valves go bad all the time. usually mechanics want about 300 bucks for the fix.

maybe someone else can chime in too

If he tested the EGR by connecting a vacuum pump to apply vacuum and the EGR doesn't make the engine stumble; you now need a new EGR valve my friend.

I'll have to give that a try. I had one lying around but I think I broke it. If I have to replace the valve it should be no biggie. I just dont want to fork over large amounts of cash to have a mechanic do something I can do.

Do you have a pic of where this might be located? Im not too familiar with the EGR system. Thanks!

I'll double check. Chances are I might have to replace that valve.

odd this was in another thread you posted regarding a code 71. this should be the culprit. being that the diaphragm inside may be torn. but if you do replace it, check all the vac lines.

So I took a look at the area in this picture today and then it hit me. About a year ago I changed the valve cover gaskets and I remember removing everything including the EGR. When I compared the vacuum line routing to my brother's SC I noticed two of the hoses were in the wrong spot and the one I think caused all this is a piece of hose that goes to the vacuum switching valve that I lost. I replaced it and double checked to make sure all hoses were connected this time. Im going to go back out tomorrow for the smog inspection since I get a free retest and hope that missing vacuum line was the problem.

tularisgp I owe you lunch.

Hell yeah. Call up Brian and Pirooz and we'll have ourselves a good old fashioned hoe down.

In other news..I PASSED!

I took it back today. I knew that little 3 inch vac hose would have something to do with it. Anyway, thanks again!

Just curious, is there any way to replace/clean that cotton-like filter/diaphragm under the egr modulator cap? Asking because mine seems pretty dry and dirty. Looks like a simple round piece of felt lol.
