Broken Trans or broken diff?
Made a quick u-turn today and got on it a little in 1st. Next thing i feel is a huge clunk and then it stalled. Engine fired right back up but now going into gear was not easy and followed by violent feedback on the shifter. I was able to cost the car back to where I needed to with the car off (I was doing about 50mph when it went poof) without any issue. Started back up and went to put it in reverse and it would start to move and then hit a wall. With enough power I could overcome that hard spot, but as whatever was broken came rotating back around it would jerk again.
I've broken trannys in other cars, this i my first W58. I also have a stock diff and just been looking for an excuse to put in my TT Auto diff in...
Think its the trans or the diff?

well, if its the diff, then you wouldn't be able to push through it at all. What gear does this happen in? or is it all gears? If it's all gears and it kinda goes away at a certain RPM, then it also might be a clutch issue.

I'm almost positive its the trans. Its all gears and any rpm. It just sounds like a party inside the trans case right now. I can't seem to find an R154 for sale anywhere either

Just wondering, how many miles where on the tranny before it crapped out? I would buy another w58 cheaper alternative then the r-154. Unless your running around 400HP or so then never mind to what I said. If the diff gave out you would not be moving at all because something would get stuck in the planetary and jam it up. Tranny sounds like it is coming apart maybe a clutch issue?

I just found out that is the guy next door to Jimmy who fixed my a/c. I've talked with your friend before after he popped the 180sx at the last event at the track. Didn't realize he was the same guy until my friend just told me

Its definitely not a clutch issue...its the trans for sure. The car is already making 403whp/385tq. No sense in putting in yet a 3rd W58. This trans was a relatively new rebuild and shifted great till a few hours ago.

LOL k then just needed to know a HP range R-154 it is ,but even with those you have to go over it with a fine toothed comb. Don't want to buy some $500 garbage pile...

Honestly, how can you really do that? If it shifts ok without being in the car, i'm gonna have to call it good. Can't crack the case and examine the gears under a microscope and I've learned that most sellers are liars when it comes to the abuse on the part. My maxim, whatever it is, double it.

i would go and get the R154, might as well with all that power eating the W58 for lunch. Like SHOLEXMAN said, break down the R154 before you install it, there are a ton of Supra owners out there that really bash on this tranny. This is the result of about 600hp through a hard 2-3 shift:

Neal'll hook you up. I didn't know you were down there. The R154's are good up until 700 (but I personally wouldn't run one over 625). But if you wanna run higher hp plunk down the wallet and call Marlin Crawler- 1200hp right there...but it'll run you a buck for every hp it holds.
