Default Cost of Machine Work

I'm wondering what the average price is for basic engine machine work? I'm thinking about ripping down my 2JZGE and rebuilding it and I'm in the process of figuring out the cost of EVERYTHING.

Now I know every place is different prices and what not, I'm looking to see what the average going rate is for people who have had it done before.

I was told by a shop locally who's built motors for Boost Logic that if your pistons are reusable, they can do the basic shortblock rebuild for $1000 new pistons add $600+. I dont know if this includes new oil pump(but you have to do that)

Also a basic head overhaul using your old valves would be $1000 If the valves are pitted or worn(exhaust valves mainly) add at least $500-1000

It's really not bad considering that I've spent $5k building a Mitsubishi 2.6 motor with forged internals and porting, and that motor wasn't near as tough.

Stay away from the larger rebuild shops. Their quality control is crap.

Find a guy that's been rebuilding motors for 20-30yrs, and does the work himself. There's no secrets to building a good motor. If they have the skills and experience/tools/machines, they will know what to look for when doing your rebuild. Check and see what their BBB info looks like too.

There's a few shops here locally that have quite a bit of experience with JZ motors if you are close to Austin.

One guy here does his valve jobs with a CNC machine. Hes the only person in the southern US with this setup and his work is superior because of it. He only does heads.
