Default EGR questions!

Okay I got the check engine light code 71. Which is the EGR malfunction. I was curious to see If I can just keep my EGR system in there but defeat the check engine light by using is method. or does it have to be removed? Will it cause any problems or concerns? I just want the check engine light gone its annoying.
