Default Should I flush my high mileage transmission?

I recently purchased a 1997 SC300 with 185,000 miles. The car runs and shifts good and its everything I was looking for. When I was looking over the car before I purchased it I noticed the transmission fluid was real dirty and used that to get the price down. Now im stuck, ive read some horror stories about people flushing there high mileage transmissions. I was thinking of just changing the fluid several times until it shows up red again. what do you guys think, change it or flush it?

Thanks

What is the exact color of the fluid? Also does it smell burned?

That is a hard call man. You can't tell if the person beat it up before you or not. If they did that fluid with the leftover clutch material is possibly helping it shift. I would leave it unless your saving money for a rebuild. If its black then I would say yes ,but it is brown and doesn't smell burned leave it for now.

Flushing does sometimes result in a problem. I just did a service on mine. Just drain the Tranny pan, I also disconected the tranny cooler lines and drained there. I'll do it again a few more times. I would not flush it.

no that means odds are right after the change or flush the tranny will break.

If its light colored and doesnt smell burned, just go ahead and drain n fill the tranny fluid like 2 or 3 times. Differential fluid needs to be changed as well, if i am not mistake.

I am not familiar to the auto trans... but shouldn't the filter (if any) should get changed, then fill it up with the correct ATF run it for a little bit allowing all gears to engage then draining the fluid and topping it off again?
I know on my other car there was a magnet on the bottom of the pan that I had clean.

change it don't flush it yet. Also change the filter while you're down there. Do you know when the last time the tranny fluid was changed?
