Default How far can I go using only the battery?

So it turns out my alternator is dead, or very close to it, likely caused by the power steering death from above. I have 2 fully charged batteries, how far do you think I can go?

I think all I can do is shut off the radio and climate control.

You'll make it about 15 minutes of driving before the draw on the battery brings it down to (-)12v and then the injectors start to miss.

by injectors missing you mean to say undriveable right?

Has anyone else had a dead alternator problem? If so, what did you do?

replace the alternator. You can also try and find a place that can rebuild one

That's kind of what I had in mind. Problem is, it doesn't look like something I can do myself, the nearest shop is pretty far away, and I don't know anybody with a trailer, and I doubt a towing company is willing to tow as far as I need.

How big of a job is it to get to the alternator and get it out?

It really isn't that big of a job to replace the alternator. Takes around a hour and a half if you know what your doing. There should be 2 bolts that you loosen either 12 or 14mm. One is for the bracket and one is for the belt tensioner. To take the belt off there is a auotmatic tensioner that you put a 12 or 14 mm socket on the end and turn so you can pull the belt off. I wouldn't drive for more then 15 minutes even with everything off you might get stuck. If it is cold out also your battery won't hold as much charge. Buy a remanned alternator and do it yourself. Save you money on labor from a shop that would do it for you. I could help ya out online just PM me and I can have you on the road again.

Its really easy. Just loosen the tensioner, remove 2 or 3 bolts holding the thing in place. Unplug a cable in the back and one more cable I believe is screwed down. Pull it out, repeat the steps backwards for the new one.

Thanks for all your help everyone, really appreciate it. I will take another look when I get the chance. Sounds easier than it looked at first glance.

I did not read the other answers but starting the car is what uses up the greater part of the battery charge not driving. I personally wouldnt do it
