SC4's have to pull the intake mani because the starter sits in between the banks of cylinders.

its not hard if you know what your doing, but if you dont then once you get stuck its really frustrating.

Ryeno-are you referring to a 400 or a 300, never done a 400 but thats what they are talking about.

Damn that makes it seem somewhat/alot easier than most have portrayed. Thanks for highlighting that aspect of the 400 starter deal. Maybe now 400 guys can try the contact fix if it happens to them.

O.L.T> Yeah i couldn't imagine dealing with that PITA on the SC4.
I work at a toyota dealer and yes they fail alot. You posted he "reached" down and handed them to you.If they werent in a "Toyota" bag he high grossed you and charged you for the whole kit and sold you a bulk piece that should only be $2-$5.They come in baggies with more parts than just the copper contact.Hope you got taken care of and nice write-up.

Well damn, Actually there was a cabinet with about twenty clear drawers in it and he pulled it outa there, I dunno if these guys had them separated or they but the contacts in bulk. But yeah all I got were the two contacts.

Well, looks like I'll be undertaking this task on my '93 400 before the summer's out.

After weeks of consistent delayed cold starts (crank-crank-crank-crank-crank-crank-bbrrrooooooooom) I figured it was finally time to swap the spark plugs, wires, ignition coils, distributor caps and rotors...Just KNOWING it had to be one of those items that hadn't been touched once in the 5 years & 100k+ miles I've had the car.

NO DICE!

In which case, I know now that it is obviously the starter. It's okay though. On a 16 year-old car the ignition coils and such were bound to go at some point. It's always nice to have new stuff under the hood. At least I don't have to think about those items for a good while now.

You did the right thing rebuilding the factory starter, the factory starters & alternators are much better units than parts store rebuilt ones.

Anyone know where I can buy the contact kits at and what exactly comes in the kit besides the two contacts?

My starter randomly clicks on start up and I think it is time to replace the contacts on it.

I walked into a toyota dealer and told them I needed the contacts but I am sure if you call you can get the whole kit with the contacts and the rubber pieces.

So I went to the Toyota dealership and ordered some new starter contacts for a "1998 Supra N/A". They retailed for $24 both. Here is a pic of what they look like in the bag along with part numbers for those interested.
