Damn that makes it seem somewhat/alot easier than most have portrayed. Thanks for highlighting that aspect of the 400 starter deal. Maybe now 400 guys can try the contact fix if it happens to them.

no problem i hope it lasts a while. Well i heard the OEM starters are good forever with the exception of the contacts. The parts guy saw me walk in with em and immediately reached down pulled two out, handed em over, I guess this happens alot for the parts to be up front. The plunger didn't look too well but i cleaned everything up a bit. I don't have any more pictures taken cause the wife got bored.
O.L.T> Yeah i couldn't imagine dealing with that PITA on the SC4.

I work at a toyota dealer and yes they fail alot. You posted he "reached" down and handed them to you.If they werent in a "Toyota" bag he high grossed you and charged you for the whole kit and sold you a bulk piece that should only be $2-$5.They come in baggies with more parts than just the copper contact.Hope you got taken care of and nice write-up.

Well, looks like I'll be undertaking this task on my '93 400 before the summer's out.
After weeks of consistent delayed cold starts (crank-crank-crank-crank-crank-crank-bbrrrooooooooom) I figured it was finally time to swap the spark plugs, wires, ignition coils, distributor caps and rotors...Just KNOWING it had to be one of those items that hadn't been touched once in the 5 years & 100k+ miles I've had the car.
NO DICE!
In which case, I know now that it is obviously the starter. It's okay though. On a 16 year-old car the ignition coils and such were bound to go at some point. It's always nice to have new stuff under the hood. At least I don't have to think about those items for a good while now.

I walked into a toyota dealer and told them I needed the contacts but I am sure if you call you can get the whole kit with the contacts and the rubber pieces.
