Default CE Light Trac off ?

Yea, I thought I had it fixed but I don't know what it is. Well my story goes when I bought the car they were on I went to my dads best friend whos a mechanic he said he fixed it no charge I have no clue what it was but the lights turned off I supposed he just unhooked the battery. Well anyways about a week later when I was cruisin on the highway around 75 MP and the CE(check engine) light came on and Trac turned off shortly after. So my only option is to go to get it diagnosed for 80$ because all the auto zones ect... Don't have the equipment or don't know how to check it. I really don't want to spend 80$ on diagnosing it so any ideas?
Thanks : )
