Default bad thermostat?

Hi all, quick question. I was driving around today just running some errands and was sitting in a drive thru and noticing a good bit of white smoke coming from my exhaust, my temp. gauge also was not registering anything at the time (was working fine earlier). As soon as I was headed home though, car stopped smoking and temp went back to normal. I was thinking that it may be a bad, or starting to go bad, thermostat. Seems to me like it was stuck closed or something. About to go check all of the fluids and hoses right now. If anyone has any thought, it would be greatly appreciated. Figures as soon as I decide to sell the car something happens ...
Oh yea, its a stock 1jz except for FMIC
Thanks

Just checked all the fluid and hoses. Radiator is full and hoses aren't leaking a drop. Also full of oil as well.
