Seen as you said "in a nutshell" here are the basics

Physical size (R154 is wider)
Weight (R154 weighs more)
Clutch setup (R154 is a pull style, W is a push)
Strength (R154 is much stronger)

they are the same. just different names...trust me

w58
came in
mk3 NA supra
sc300
mk4 supra

different variations of the w-series transmissions came in different toyota vehicles. w55 in is300 and w56, i think, in toyota tacoma.

light weight. inexpensive. easy to find. most people claim it can hold about 350ish hp. not sure of torque.

r154
mk3 turbo supra
soarer
cresta?

expensive(not really). harder to find(but not really). hold a lot of power.

Gear ratios similar?

Ratios for w58

* First Gear: 3.285:1
* Second Gear: 1.894:1
* Third Gear: 1.275:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
* Fifth Gear: 0.783:1
* Reverse: -3.768:1

Ratios for R154

*First Gear: 3.251
*Second Gear: 1.955
*Third Gear: 1.310
*Fourth Gear: 1.000
*Fifth Gear: 0.753
*Reverse: -3.18

discuss ratio impressions? Driveability? Difference seems negligible at first glance...

found this article from one google search.

So most people who convert to 5 speed in a SC400 use the r154(people who are too cheap to use a v160, like me) and a custom bellhousing...yeah?

I'm swapping mine too. People use either, but 5th gear with an R is closer to the stock 4th gear (auto) in the SC, so you'll be doing similar RPM in 5th as you would be before the swap. Seen as I drive on the hwy a lot, that's important to me. if you keep the engine relatively stock, you could use a W, that's my understanding. I'm going with an R anyways, even though I don't have any major power upgrade plans. The Supra R154 gearshift needs to be changed or modified to come up in the correct spot. Finding a W with the correct gearshift would probably be easier than finding the parts to convert the R. Look around the site though, the info is there on how to convert the R.
