Valve cover gasket job
So search didn't come up with what I needed exactly.
I just ordered the VCG pair. Lexus says there are SEVEN small grommets that go on each cover. I'm sure I can get those from a local shop. However, I want to know about the spark plug holes. Are there seals? I have read no and yes. Also, when I do the VCGs should I apply any engine sealant? I have a tube of GM engine sealant that I was given. OR could I do away with the VCG and just use this sealant? The oil pan on my old Celica and Toyota replaced the seal with an orange sealant. This GM stuff I have is some serious stuff and very thick |
Get the grommets (washers) from the dealer or get a aftermarket set
that includes them. Not sold seperate in the aftermarket. You need the valve cover gaskets, covers are recessed for the gasket to sit in. There's no spark plug tube seals to replace, plugs are in a valley between the valve covers. There are large threaded casting plugs in the valley also, make sure they aren't leaking oil. If so, use liquid teflon on the threads. (Bid azz allen screw, forget the size) Apply RTV in each corner _()_ where the cam bearing caps are. You'll see the original RTV when you take the covers off. |
Okay. I was able to score Advance auto's VCG "kit" for $25 and some odd change because I told them that the dealer had each side for $12 bucks. I'm not sure if the grommets are included or not. If so, I can probably pick them up on loose order at CarQuest or NAPA
