Default quick question, power steering stiffness.

I searched and found this wonderful thread also

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...=319113&page=2

But I still have questions because, My wheel/car isnt whining when turning, just a noticeable stiffness in the wheel. I check my Reservoir and it wasn't leaking from the cap, checked the tubing and followed it around a bit and didn't see any leaks. Should I attempt bleeding it possibly? (the one where you lift up the front with jacks, take off res cap / add towels around it / move wheel back and forth repeat) I'm not too confident working with things like this under the hood yet, as that thread does, removing this, and I don't have my own tools

Just wondering what could it be, its been like this for 2 days now.

BUMP, Im having the same problem my powersteering. It use to be really easy to turn but now its stiff. it might have been cause of the extreme winter that I put it through. I checked the fluid and it was low so i topped it off but could there possibly be a air pocket?

There has been talk about the sensor screen within the power steering pump system throughout a few of the threads I found. Well, I think I may have found the problem.....maybe.

When I pulled the rack off to replace it, I pulled the actuator/sensor off the old rack to put on the new one (make sure you have a crescent wrench that has at least a 1 1/2" opening). I noticed the screen that folks talk about. Well mine was completely dirty and clogged. Could this be the reason that the PS pump is still whining even after replacing it?

I've attached a pic below. As you can see, I've already cleaned the screen.
Go here for the picture.

I basically did this well I was at a shop and the guy inspected my car and I told him about this problem, he took out the "valve" and it was reallllllly dirty and grimey and he cleaned the screen (also one piece was broken letting through more crap =/) but it works great now. He basically took all the fluid out and cleaned it and put new fluid in and restored the awesome steering.

Though one problem, he refilled the PS with non-ATF fluid so I might have to figure out a way to take the fluid out and replace it with ATF..

What sensor on the rack? I noticed i had that cut off when I did my swap, and now it's very hard to steer. Anyone have a pic of what this is/ where this goes? Also, I don't know if the 1jz harness has it. Does that have to be extended?

There are two units attached to the rack and pinion. There is a selenoid that controls the flow and there is also a pressure sensor attached to the banjo fitting. My 1JZ harness does not have the harness for the pressure sensor, but the selenoid is absolutely there. I took out that sensor and plugged it.

The selenoid is the unit that contains the screen. It is approximately 1 1/2" in diameter and about 2" long.

Please take a look at this thread:

I'd guide you but I haven't a clue really. This was a DIY I'm not capable of.

K new problem.... my power steering comes and goes it'll work for a few days then outta no where it'll become stiff... what does this indicate? anyone? I hope its not the pump and still just a filter fix. im gonna ask the mechanic to take a look at the solenoid when i go to install my coils on thursday.

well i recently had my power steering pump changed out then a few days later the steering went hard. i took it back to the mech and it didnt have to much fluid. when we looked at that time there wasnt a leak that we could find. so he filled it up and told me to come back the next day because the shop was closing. the next day we put it on the lift. we looked around and found a small leak on the drivers side. you know where the two tubes are for the power steering that goes to the oil cooler i believe. well the metal part slowly rusted through. maybe that can be your problem. u just might need to change out one of the tubes.

so I had the mechanic take out the solenoid filter and the thing was clogged to the max. my fluid was also almost black, instead of the bright red it is now. he did a reverse flush and my steering feels smoother then ever. he was actually unaware of the issue with the filter even though he himself owns a soarer. so he appreciated the gained knowledge as am I. Thanks everyone. I hope this solved the problem permanently.

I just replaced my pwr steering pressure hose and the steering was stiff. I drove around and I hit a bump and voila! It was like night and day. I could turn with my pinky it was so loose. Next morning it was stiff again I think I have to bleed it out. I was also using the lucas power steering oil. Maybe that helped?
