Default Engine Swap: Is it smog legal

I'm planning on putting a 2jzgte in my sc300, but i'm really worried about how i'm gonna deal with smog. I live in California, and we have uptight smog restrictions. But i've seen people around the forum with complete swaps, how did you guys go about getting it certified. Any info would be nice. Also is it going to be drastically harder to get the JDM engine certified vs. the usdm, just because its foreign. Thx guys.

from what i know. if swapping to JDM motor u gotta swap some parts out to USDM to make it smog legal.

as for engine wise.. as long as its the same year or newer.. same model or better ur good to go. i think.

if you swap in a gte there is no real legal way for you to be legal. Basically you're not gunna be smog legal if you swap a gte. You can smog it and pass.

but in reality you're just gunna have to find someone you can pay off

i was hoping that wouldn't be the reality, damn. I was thinking if i could pull off finding a completely stock usdm 2jzgte out of a supra tt that it would be similar enough that they'd let it pass, but in california who knows. Has anyone completed the swap legally in california or anywhere.

If you get a USDM 2jzgte your good bro. Technically i guess u could be considered kinda illegal, if you tell them its from a Supra, but from what i know when they look up your car it says 2jz (Cops). Its not like your driving a 240 with a SR20 swap. It's still a 2jz bro. And Yes you can Pass Smog with a USDM swap, as long as you have all your EGR stuff hooked up, and keep it pretty much stock. Your only concern is the visual inspection, just don't Bling It Out and your good. My cousin is a Po Po and he always tells me about how he's sick of pulling over "dumb young punks in 240's". They have a Manual that has the most popular illegal motor swaps. I quickly checked for sc's and nothing.

Im going Turbo, You should too.

I remember there was a thread on this. No gte swap into an SC is legal in CA. It may pass smog, but no way as far as visual. Kinda sucks though since Hondas/Acuras can get BAR stickers for their swaps.

you could pass smog but will not pass a visual inspection and start checking engine blocks. And if you get a ref ticket and your car has a 2jz-gte in an sc3, consider the bastard crushed.

But this really shouldnt be one of your biggest concerns as far as doing the swap goes. Just do the swap have fun with it, dont be dumb or too flashy on the road and try not to get pulled over. When smog time comes around let the clublexus know and someone will be able to help you out (me).

does cali harass you if your tags and registration is from another state, and you have a swap when pulled over?

This has been discussed like 1,000,000,000 times.

Long story short. This is a general concensus. Your local/state laws may be different.

If your car is OBD1, you can swap in an OBD1 or OBD2 motor set.
If your car is OBD2, you can only swap in an OBD2 motor set. You can't go backwards.

Just go NA-T!
