Default Catalytic Converter - SC300

Hi Guys,

After a short drive, and after I've turned off my engine, I hear several clicks/ticks (continuously for a few minutes) from what I believe is the catalytic converter. I was told that this can be a normal function or a sign that the catalytic converter is busted. Can you guys shed some light on this?

Note: Car is 1993 w/ 205,000 miles on the odo. Not sure if Cats were ever changed or even if that is needed.

I cant with 100% certainty pin point the sound from the cats. I am as positive as one can be while sticking his head below the door jam to listen. I am pretty ignorant to this issue so I wont rule anything out.

People who want to pass smog? Or people who live in the most environmental stringent state in the WORLD, California.

Both are concerns of mine. Can someone help with the topic please?

Don't get me wrong, I didnt mean to chew you up! Just consider yourself lucky to be outside of California with the ability to have that nice engine bay day to day.

I always thought the clicking noises were from a heat shield contracting after being superheated from driving, and was normal. both my 400 and 300 do this after driving.

Yea I believe it has to do with a heat shield. Ever since I had my SC it would make that same sound. It passed smog so I'm thinking the cats are still working fine.

Thanks for your input, I was going to plan out a whole new exhaust system "while I was at it" but since it seems normal, I suppose I'll save my money.

The SC400 has three cats made in California only. The third one is a Sub-catalytic converter. Most often then not, those sub cats are empty, unless sold in CAL.
