Default A hello and a code 71

Hello everyone, im new to the board and i just purchased a black SC300 w 142k miles this monday in houston for $4500. I also own a 93.5 N/A Supra so i know the drivetrain well.

I ran seafoam through the engine this afternoon and after driving around for about 30min the check engine light came on. I checked it and it threw code 71 which according to my supra manual is an EGR malfunction. I reset the ecu and the CEL hasnt come back on. Im assuming the codes are the same for each car, can someone confirm that code 71 is an EGR malfunction?

thanks,

rich

its 90% EGT sensor, i have that too, if u keep resting it, its just going to come back on after X amount of miles, and the interval will just shorten.

Vacuum modulator is a likely cause of error code 71.

I doubt your sensor is wrong. I had a code 71 CEL a few years ago. My brother cleaned the EGR valve and lines and it was fine for a while. The CEL came back after a few months and it was intermittent. I described the symptoms to the mechanic when I had my 120K mile service done and he said it was most likely the vacuum modulator. He tested it and it was faulty. I find a general code that says "EGR malfunction" to be a bit frustrating.

If you don't feel like testing the system & want to try a quicky.
Remove the temp sensor & clean it off. The end gets carboned up
& the temp value is incorrect. (the carbon insulates the sensor tip
from reading true exhaust temp)
