there's not a whole lot left to do for that price. If you want a nice daily driver I would just keep it like that. You could get maybe high flow cats and bigger downpipes, or look into the modifying the torque converter so it will pull quicker from a stop.

www.l-tunedparts.com

Dragon Torque Converter $749.00
S&S Headers $599.00

That's about all else you're gonna get short of custom work or spray. I'm not sure how well the headers work since I don't know anyone who has them but I'm considering ordering a set this summer.

the site says $960 for the tq but 40-50rwhp is a good gain.

Headers are gonna make the car loud. wives don't like that:thumbdn:

Unfortunately, torque converters do not add horsepower.

All the TQ does is allow the transmission to operate within the powerband of the engine.

And the headers on the SC do not make it overly loud. Cheap mufflers will, but headers....no.

Luke_in_SD May 29, 2007 03:17 PM

thanks for the correction, but wouldn't a better tq allow more power to the rear wheels? Also most cars with headers are known to make what ever exhaust you have louder. generally speaking

An aftermarket Torque converter only moves the rpm range higher (in this case) in which the transmission engages. Thats it.

Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent mod as the SC's trans is geared to engage well below the 1UZ's powerband. The Dragon unit gives the car some much needed oomph off the line.

As for headers......yes, you are correct that in general headers to raise the exhaust volume. My feeling on this though is with the small displacement of the 1UZ, combined with a stock (or up to 2.25") exhaust, the volume is not outlandish. Back in the day I dropped some Hedman Headers on my Small block Chevy Nova.....that got LOUD! I know guys with the Tex and S&S headers on the SC4. There is a noticable change in the exhaust note. More throaty & deeper. I personally didn't think it was much louder. Then again this may be a more individual thing.

If you're considering headers, find a member in your general area, meet up and listen. You might be surprised.

Lextreme TC is $200
Port Match the intake manifold (upper and lower) to the gaskets = $10 for grinding stones + drill
SAFC2 = $200
Tune = $150
Rush Import Long Headers = $550ish + $150ish shipping

You'll be making a good amount of extra ponies with the intake, exhaust, and tuning! Also probably pick up a few mpg with a good tune.

And the car will sound amazing.

Dont for get a SAFC2 that should get you 20 plus HP by itself and is under $350

mitsuguy Jun 3, 2007 03:53 PM

save up another grand and do a 1jz swap...

thats my winter modding plans...

agreed...while those Aussie headers are pretty damn sweet, the modifications necessay to get the stock exhaust to align wouldn't be worth the trouble. You would either lose your cats or have a piping disaster as they run pretty deep under the car. Those headers should really be accompanied by a new exhaust set up all the way back. Reusing the stock cats would require flanges to be purchased or some extensive welding to be undertaken. Slip-in racing cats would be best. Then, you need an X-pipe. The stock muffs could work...but this it and of itself is $1000+. While the hp/tq gains are there: it is not as simple as $550+shipping.

I agree with mitsuguy. A 1JZ swap is the cheapest and easiest way to make big power from an SC. Short of a swap or forced induction (which costs a boat load), performance upgrades (like a full exhaust) really aren't worth it in my humble opinion.

If you go high quality with a PI Torque Converter and you need a shop to do the install, you are $1200 in the hole. A full exhaust from the headers back is upwards of another $1200. You need an LSD to accompany the TC. Now, you are in the hole almost a grand more. At this point, you might as well have been patient and went in on an M90. Or, you could have gotten a JZZ30 half cut with R154, driveshaft, and LSD from Jarco.

That was really long...but, to me, that is the truth about the 1UZ. Swap, go high, or go home. Anything in the middle is not bang for buck (my opinion of course).

Personally, I am saving up for a M/T swap in the fall so that I can throw a few gears around. That could be the last mod for the car. But, it could also open the door to some brand of FI. Who knows?
