cold weather causes transmission to make strange sounds.
When the weather gets cold and the car has sat in the cold (about 30-55 degrees) for a couple of hours the car starts to make some strange noises.
Noise happens when the car is cold and you can hear it between 20-25mph then next time u hear it will be between 35-40mph. It is very consistent, will only occur between those speeds while the transmission hasn't fully warmed up. It does not matter how warm my engine is because I can warm my car for 10mins before i start driving and it will still make the sound because the transmission is still cold. Once the transmission is warmed there will be no more sound. Sound happens during accelerating, gas off, and also when the gear is in neutral. If the outside temperature is above 55degrees it will not happen at all.
The noise is best described as a wind blowing sound coming from the shift lever area. Its not very loud but the colder the weather gets the louder and longer it will last. You can hear the noise over the radio.
I know its not the transmission mount because I have replaced that arleady.
The transmission fluid was flushed and replaced 2 months ago with the toyota ATF-type4 fluid. I had the differential fluid flushed and replaced 2 months ago too with i believe 75w-90 or 80, whichever one it said in the manual.
my car is a 92 sc400 with 81k miles.
sorry for the lengthy description.
can anyone chime in their thoughts please?

Can you describe the sound?
I posted a query a few days ago, but instead of transmission, I attributed it to the hydraulic fan ... just because I associated it to sound from a propeller plane.
The sound I hear is like 'frrr' and happens when engine is not driving the wheels (coasting down hill). [95sc400, 65k miles]
Are we talking about the same problem?

the sound
mine sounds the same as the original poster described, a "wind blowing sound" - in fact, it sounds so much like the wind that I took it to a windshield repair shop to fix it - after much testing, we determined it was definitely not the windshield or anything air leak.
out of curiosity, did you get an answer to your post the other day?

last winter was the first winter that the car had experienced 35-45 degree temperature. i had the car back in california before and I've never heard it make that sound there before and it never gets to below 60 degrees in winter over there.
this winter I can't hear the sound anymore. so I don't know how to solve the problem exactly. the only thing i've done to the transmission during the last year is have another transmission fluid change. see if that works for you. keep us updated.
