Question SC300 Query

Hello I just got a automatic '96 Toyota Soarer 3.0GT yesterday and I have a couple of questions to ask it is the Toyota eqivilant to a Lexus SC300 so here goes:

Situation one: There are a couple of little fagg*ts in a lancer GSR with a turbo in it sitting next to you reving up his little 1.5 litre car.

How can I get the maximum and fastest accelertion e.g. for drag races?
Do I: Have ECT set to 'ECT PWR' and over drive off then floor it?

Would I get faster acceleration if I started off with ECT set to PWR overdrive off and set in second gear?

Question 2: Say I'm going at 50 km/h and I want to do engine braking do I just shift to gear 2?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer me.

(Still wish my car was a manual but then again autos good for a laid-back day cruising.)

Seems like someone really wants a manual. As far as the Evo goes. Have the ECT on and just brake boost of the line. Either way the Evo is gonna romp on you. And on a side note I think the Evo is a 2.0 liter. Damn GSR's. But you should be able to source a R154 trans for a swap if anything. or you could go the route of an upgraded Auto.

Whatever you do dont manually shift your auto tranny, ive known people who've destroyed their tranny's by doing so.

I've done it a lot on my SC when I was younger, my tranny is still strong.

Hey guys, thanks for the replys.

Just one more question I was reading the Japanese car manual and to what extent I could read it to I figured out that when your driving normally and want to do engine braking you shift the auto transmission gear to 2nd car and it should work.

So from you guys' replys I have concluded this: ECT on PWR mode Overdrive off should get me the best accleration? or ECT on PWR mode and overdrive off but on 2nd gear?

Thanks,

Acceleration is the same regardless of the settings on anything.

ECT Pwr ON will raise the RPM at which the car automatically shifts gears by a couple hundred revs. It also holds each gear longer. When mashing the pedal to the floor, ECT Pwr has no effect on actual acceleration, but when you reach redline, it will pull the gear a little more than if it was off.

O/D OFF simply prevents the car from using the 4th gear. Depending how fast you are gonna go, O/D off will allow you to pull 3rd gear to close to 112mph before hitting the rev limiter, wheras if O/D were on then 3rd would shift to 4th at under 110mph.

For me, I leave ECT Pwr, O/D off and manually shift from L to 2 to D

you have to drive it a bit to time the shift properly so as to maximize revs and not hit the rev limiter. Pushing the stick from L to 2 should be around 4700rpm and that will shift the car into 2 right before the rev limiter. From 2 to D will be around 71mph.
