I have a 1993 SC400 and my a/c has been blowing warm so far. Last year i had it filled with freon but abviously i have a bad compressor or a leak. Anyway Do any of you guys know how much it would be to switch it to the new system because i have the old system where you use the freon thats extremely hard to find. And since mine is going bad i guess i should change it over. Any info on this would help.

Let me ask, when you fill with freon does it last for a few days to a week, then go bad again, if so, then that means that the needle where you fill up is messed up, thats what happened with me. If thats not the case, order a new compressor off of ebay, i did that and it works fine, just make sure its already converted to 134A, or w/e that new one is called. Hope this helps.

Have a PSI test dun you might be able to find the leak like that, on the converting ive heard it not to bad but i dont remember how much it was. good luck

Yes it lasted a couple of months then poof(gone). Come to think of it, My refill hose did not have the cap on it until recently. Mabey it leaked out. So To convert to the r134 all i have to do is replace the compressor?

All we did was replace the AC compressor, because my old one had locked up and wouldnt work, so we checked out ebay, and walla found a r134 set AC compressor and ordered it. The part cost like 250 bucks. It was rebuilt, but it still works till today. But to answer your question, yes.

You don't need any new parts installed to convert your a/c over to r134a, but it's not something you can do with stuff you buy from the parts store either.

To convert from freon to r134a you'll need to have a professional shop do the work cuz it takes special equipment to apply vacuum and pressure on the a/c system. They will first vacuum out any of the old freon for proper disposal cuz that stuff is lethal to our atmosphere. Next they will find the leak by pressurizing the system with a dye that shows up where the leak is. Then they'll vacuum it out again, fix the leak and do a pressure test to make sure it's keeping a charge. After the leak is fixed they will install new fittings on the high and low pressure sides that only accept r134a. Then it's just filled with r134a and you have a/c again.

My car has the conversion and it's not nearly as cold as freon because the system was designed to run freon, but it's better than nothing.

Please don't put anymore freon into it. One Freon molecule can last decades in the ozone layer and continually destroy millions of ozone molecules that make a vital filter in the atmosphere. Freon is so foul. http://www.ciesin.org/TG/OZ/ozndplt.html
