SC300 Starter Parts
Over the past month or so I have been getting the click noise from the starter. After some research online i decided to order the two rebuild kits from Toyota.
Part # 28226-22050 was $8.57 Part# 28226-74070 was $12.12 They will be in tomorrow afternoon. The parts guy at toyota had no idea what they were but I gave him the part numbers and he is ordering them today. Here is what I am going to do with the money I will hopefully save by rebuilding vs buying a reman from the parts store: Harbor Freight Air sander / Drill 19.99 3/8 drive air ratchet 19.99 Air fittings 10.00 1/2" torque wrench 9.99 Impact socket set (metric and standard) 24.99 Being able to buy more tools instead of buying a reman starter...Priceless |
i am getting the same problem with my starter. sometime when i turn the key it just clicks and doesnt even turn the motor over. please update this thread if/when you fix the problem!

You guys should do a search for "indypwr" and "starter contact points" and see if that sounds similiar to what you're experiencing  Good luck. -M. |

i did this fix. It took me like 2 days cause I'm a total noob and I couldnt find the starter for a while. Took me forever to take it out too, but I eventually got it done. Just make sure you dont take apart the wrong end of the starter :egads: .

DIY SC300 Starter rebuild
14mm Socket (starter bolts)
3 long extensions 1 socket swivel 7mm wrench (for back of starter cap removal) 14mm wrench (disconnect hot wire from starter and disconnect contact posts during re-build) Jack and one jack stand small wire brush Step 1: disconnect battery Step 2: jack up car on drivers side and place jack stand where the front door starts. (if its too far forward towards the front tire it makes maneuvering yourself under the car uncomfortable when re-installing. Step 3: jack up drivers side rear Step 4: use 14mm wrench to crack the lower starter bolt, then use socket, swivel, and 3 extensions to remove lower bolt. Step 5: Upper bolt is tricky to get to. I couldnt get to it from above. So to crack it loose from below I had to use the 14mm socket, swivel and extensions at a 90 degree angle and crack it that way. Once cracked loose attach socket wrench and remove completely. Step 6: once bolts are removed starter will fall down but not come out. Remove the one starter wire using 12mm wrench or socket and remove wire harness loom clip and the other wire harness using a small straight screwdriver to release plastic clips. Step 7: Starter will come out all the way and now it is time to re-build. Step 8: Remove 12mm bolt holding negative wire to the termial post. Step 9: remove back plate of starter 3 or 4 7mm bolts Step 10: pull out rod with spring attached. I used a small wire brush to clean-up the contact surface. it will want to come out when you remove the cover Step 11: carefully remove one contact terminal at a time. 14 mm wrench to remove terminal posts and re-install that terminal using the new hardware. A great site with pictures is: http://yotarepair.com/startercontacts.html Re-assemble and re-install starter Tricks: upon re-installation clip the wire harness loom to the back of the starter tab as this helps hold one end of the starter up while trying to get the lower 14mm bolt threaded. |
