Replace valve cover durin tune-up too?
Ok this weekend or next weekend Im planning to get a tune-up on my car. So far Im going to get new cap n rotors, NGK Iridium plugs, and distributor o-rings, and a set of wires. I ordered most of that stuff online. My mechanic is chargin 120 bucks for labor for the tune-up what do u guys think?
Also, since my valve cover gasket is leaking slightly, should I take this opportunity to get that replaced too? For 60 dollars more, hell replace the valve cover gasket, assumin that I get the part myself. What do u guys think? Whats the part number for the gasket? |
yes replace the valve cover gaskets, if you let it go it will escalate and you will have a major oil leak as well as your car will run hotter and burn through coolant. Quick fix that could save u a bunch of money down the road.

good time to fix anything that is wrong with the car. even a leaking valve cover gasket :)

Ok I talked to my mechanic and he also told me to get some grommets too at the dealership while were at it. What grommet is he talkin bout? Whats the part number for it so I can order it through Toyota
|
you should do the cap and rotors yourself...easy 15 minute job. everything else takes some more time. good luck

Ok I just got everythin done for 180k and took the guy like 3+ hours. When he got everythin out, the gaskets were toasted and the spark plugs were damp with oil. The car ran a tad smoother. It makes me worry because if the valve cover gaskets get that bad, other gaskets must be as bad also

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I'm just jerkin' with ya man, but that's a good price actually to do all that work. As for other gaskets potentially being bad, just check the front crank seal and the cam seals. If those are good then drive until you notice another issue, until then don't stress...takes away the pleasure of driving the car  |
Yep the cam and crank seals are bad according to the dealer diagnosis. When the car is up on a lift u can see some oil near the crank area. For now, other than that, I think everything is almost done maintenance wise for the motor. My next target is either motor/tranny mounts or lca bushings
|
Do the tranny mount, it's $48 from Carson Toyota and takes about 20 minutes to change.
