For gas mileage reasons, I leave my O/D on.

When Overdrive is ON, ie no light in dash, your car WILL shift into 4th gear to save gas.

When Overdirve is OFF, ie O/D OFF light in dash, your car stays in third gear, running at a higher RPM, thereby not saving gas.

Generally, under 35 mph, O/D off/on makes no big difference. Above 40, i keep it on.

However, lately, when i'm going over 40 mph and need to slow down because somebody made a right in front of me, or anything that requires slowing but not stopping, I've just been hitting OD off and letting her drop into 3rd to slow me down rather than hitting the brakes. As soon as you push that little button back in and turn OD on, the car shifts to 4th immediately if your foot is off of the gas.

O/D is the final gear, so for a 4 speed, 4th gear, 5 speed, 5th gear, etc. The input is slower than the output in overdrive, saving gas but sacrificing power. There is no reason to turn O/D off, unless you are driving in a hilly location (ex downhill to prevent the car from speeding up) or if you want the car to stay in 3rd gear longer (prevent upshifting). For general driving, leaving O/D on will provide better gas mileage, and quieter driving (lower rpms).

Edit: LexSC888 you bastard! (I kid, I kid) You posted basically the same thing as I did while I was typing my post up.

wouldn't that put more stress on the tranny?
i guess it would be avoidable stress, i'd rather replace my brake pads/rotors then to rebuilt the tranny sooner than i have to

but i dunno, somebody correct me

You're probably right, it does require more frequent shifting of the gears in a much more harsh manner, but sometimes my foot doesnt wanna move away from the gas ya know

indeed, OLT, I think it was me that started the thread. Perhaps there are several threads about it, and I hadn't done a search back in my n00b days ..
...check that, I'm still a n00b.

You guys ever go back and read your old posts from years back? It's weird

You can also use OD for downshifting on highway runs, and you can control when you shift from 3rd to 4th.

Comes in handy sometimes
