This makes me skittish. If I'm going to suck a liquid into the intake through a vacuum line won't that potentially hydrolock the engine and cause damage?? Someone please enlighten me on this part.

I think they mean the brake booster line. That's what I did cuz you won't have to deal with removing the intake piping and it's easier to pour in the liquid through the tube. Also, I heard it's better to pour it in through the bosster line.

This is exactly what I thought at first but I guess in order to hydrolock, the amount of liquid coming in has to be pretty significant. (Sucking in a whole puddle through a cold-air-intake is significant)
I'm still skeptical about doing this.
Seems to me that if you do this on a hot car with the cats warmed up, liquid won't be too good for them.
Dunno.

OK, I'm giving it a try. I went out and bought a can of Seafoam and read the direction and some of the threads here on CL. Here's what I did.

1) Let car run until it's up to normal operating temperature and then turn off
2) Disconnect PCV hose at the PCV valve and rotated the hose so it now points upwards
3) Attached a small funnel into the hose and poured a very small amount into the funnel
4) Started the engine
5) While engine is running SLOWLY pour the Seafoam into the funnel until 1/3 of the can is gone and shut off the engine
6) Let sit for 5-10 minutes
7) Restart car and let it run while it smokes like a bastard unti the smoke is gone

I'm going for my test ride now and I'll post back my findings. Wish me luck!

oh the brake booster method. my friend did it on his legend. he told me it still works great. if i could remember he told me that if you was to do it from the brake booster, while its sucking in the fluid you'll also have to give it some air so that the car wont die out. is that correct?

Sorry guys. I forgot to report back on my Seafoam experience.

After it smoked like crazy for about 5 minutes I took it for a test drive. I was immediately impressed with the smooth idle and increased throttle response. I was also able to spin the tires a little easier than before. Definitely seems to have regained some of the lost power. I am now convinced that this is one product that works exactly as advertised.

I previously added 1/3 can of seafoam to the crankcase and then drained it the next day. I didn't really notice any difference afterwards. Although I asked the guy who changed the oil to see what it looked like when it came out. He said it was black as can be. It had only been 1500+- miles since my last synthetic oil change. It looked like new oil on the dipstick prior to the Seafoam experiment so obviously it did a good job of cleaning the internals of the engine. I will also be adding a full can to a full tank of gas to see if this helps.

I hope this helps you guys out.

Good thread, brings back memories

I had a 1980 280ZX with 170,000 miles that started to idle roughly even after a tune-up. My buddy came over with 2 cans of Seafoam and we just sucked both hrough one of the intake vacuum hoses.

There was so much black smoke for about 10 minutes that the fire dept showed up

Car ran great for another 2 years before I sold it.

Heh, soon people will be using SeaFoam to clean their blinker fluid reservoir and exhaust bearings.
I think I just might try some of this magical stuff.
Speaking of SeaFoam:

Good luck buddy!
