There's 4 bolts holding the shifter onto the transmission.

The job can be done with the console in place.

Ya I took the 4 bolts off holding the plate that has the big rubber piece. Now there are another 4 bolts that will remove the shifter completely?

Right. Four for the boot, then 4 more for the shifter.

Just replaced my shifter bushings last week. 1993 w58. I went with the Marlin Crawler shifter socket and urethane bushing. Purchased from Driftmotion, their website says its for R154 but after extensive research on other forums I learned the same bushings will work for the w58, and IT DID!

My shifter was very loose while in gear, more than 2" of play and a lot of shaking and vibrating as well. I replaced the middle bushing and the little ball socket at the end and its nice and tight now. Its easier to find gears, no more shifter wobbles, shaking or vibration. Easy to install both. Used pliers to pry off the socket bushing and small needle nose pliers to clean out the middle bushing. Be careful and dont let any of the old bushing pieces fall into the transmission. Mine were in a million little pieces so i had to be extra careful. Definitely a good mod for less then $25 and the difference is night and day on shifter feel.

Heres a link to the bushings

and link on how to install the middle bushing
