Default SC400 Tranny!!

I have a 92' SC400 and last week while driving, the transmission just died and acted like I had put it in neutral.......but it was still in drive. I cut the car off, sat for about two minutes, started it back up and the car went into drive, but only drove for about 1/8 of a mile and went back into neutral. Someone told me that I needed a new transmission, but before I spend the money for the new tranny.......is there anything else that this problem could possibly be?? Thanks alot!!!

Have you checked the condition of the fluid or filter? I would check that the filter isnt dirty......sounds like a loss of fluid pressure.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem, but my dad's '90 ls 400 had kinda the same thing. Except it was weird, it would only mess up when the headlights were on. It would be in drive then you couldn't go past like 30 or 40 like it was stuck in 1st gear, and it would kick really hard. He took it to lexus and it was some kinda weird electrical problem, cost about 200 bucks to fix. BTW his car 316K miles on it and still running strong : )
